"An Alternate Life" by Graham Abbott.
We are
living in challenging times. The rural world is moving towards a capitalist reality
where the constant media propoganda beguiles salt of the earth
peoples. This phenomenon is resulting in the depopulation of rural areas
with the influx of hopefuls to find their fortune. The worldwide economic
recession quandary is increasing unemployment, poverty and homelessness.
The images represent both rural and urban township life. The tenets
of township life are being eroded away by drugs, gangs and crime.
We are being isolated through fear and the neglect of ubuntu.
Some of the
images on exhibition have been printed as negatives; a haunting simile.
This I hope will help the viewer realise the dilemma our future is facing
if we don't take note of the problem. All the basic requirements of rural
life are being threatened. We need to halt the depopulation of our country
communities and expose the advertised materialist facade. The overwhelmed
cities are now full of empty promises. An alternate life of farming and
working with nature may be the only way for survival of a disenfranchised
people.
